iOS upgrade makes the devices battery life even worst?

If you've experienced runaway battery suckage on your brand-spanking-new iPhone 4S, you won't be alone if you're still cursing your Cupertian smartphone after updating to Apple's supposed battery-fixing iOS 5.0.1.

Apple admitted battery-life problems with the iPhone 4S and the new iOS 5 earlier this month, and released the iOS 5.0.1 update on Thursday.

Many users, however, report that the fix either didn't help or made matters worse. Witness, for example, discussion threads on Apple's support forums with titles such as "5.0.1 update--even worse battery life", "iOS 5.1 - Made my iPhone 4S battery performance worse!", and the rather ungrammatical "Not so Happy with the iOS 5.01 Upgrade! It gets WORST :(".

Even the thread entitled "iOS 5.01 fixes battery issues" contains comments such as "Yesterday I upgraded to 5.0.1 and now battery life is SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE," "is there any way to go back to IOS5.0.0??!!!," and "I'd highly recommend that anyone who has acceptable battery life not upgrade."

The fact that some iPhone 4S users presumably had their battery problems fixed by the iOS 5.0.1 upgrade, some have not, and some report that their problems have become worse, points to the possibility that the problem may be more hardware-related – which would, of course, be a far more expensive problem for Apple to address than a simple iOS upgrade.

But remembering how Apple dismissed the iPhone 4's "Antennagate" controversy, we don't see a mass recall in the offing – and to be fair, the fact that millions of iPhone 4S users are not complaining would argue that a user-by-user replacement program would make far better business sense.

iOS 5.0.1 arrives with battery fix problems

The updates comes a little more than a week after Apple first acknowledged that some users were, in fact, running into problems with battery life after upgrading to the newer version of iOS. In conjunction with that, the company released a beta version of the software for developers to test. A second beta of that software arrived a day and a half later.

Apple has not copped to any specific reason as to why some users were experiencing shorter than usual battery life as part of iOS 5. Originally it was believed to be related to some of the hardware changes with the iPhone 4S, including a move to a dual-core processor, though some iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 users were experiencing issues as well.

Not included in the update are two recently discovered, though for now inaccessible iOS features. They include a panorama mode in Apple's camera application that's able to take panoramic shots by sweeping the camera side to side, as well as a new auto-correct menu in the keyboard. Both of those features are tucked away within the depths of the software, but were pulled out by developers this week.

Enable The Native Panorama Camera Mode On iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPad 2, iPod touch Running iOS 5 Without Jailbreak

As those of you who regularly follow Redmond Pie will know, we are more than partial to a jailbreak here and there. Having said that, those using the new iOS 5 are restricted to a tethered jailbreak (or the slightly-more bearable SemiTether), so unfortunately, until we hear anything more from, say, the Chronic Dev-Team, pod2g, or the iPhone Dev-Team, we cannot enjoy Apple’s latest and greatest mobile operating system in all that untethered jailbroken loveliness.

For that reason, lots of people have opted to hang on to versions of iOS 4, particularly the GreenPois0n’d 4.2.1; as well as 4.3.3, which brought in many new jailbreakers with comex’s third iteration of the über-easy-to-use JailbreakMe.

Also, iPhone 4S, and iPad 2 users are completely left out because there is no currently no jailbreak solution available for these two devices.

But now, those of you on iOS 5, with an itch to perform a hack without having to jailbreak the device, you can now enable the hidden-yet-native panorama option for your camera’s device, using a very simple hack.

This will work on any Gyroscope capable device, including iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

We’ve enclosed a guide on how this can be achieved, so follow carefully, and you’ll be taking panoramic snaps lickety split!

Step 1: Backup your device’s data in iTunes. This is not the usual precautionary measure, you’ll actually need to modify this backup in order to perform the hack.

Step 2: Download iBackupBot from here. It’s compatible with both Windows and Mac.

Step 3: Once it’s finished downloading, install and launch.

Step 4: Locate your com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist file, as depicted below.

Step 5: Double click the file which will take you to the editing page.

Step 6: Directly below <key>DiskSpaceWasLow</key> <false/>, add <key>EnableFirebreak</key> <true/> then hit the disk icon to save.

Step 7: Restore to your backup via iTunes.

Step 8: The process is now complete. Launch the Camera.app, navigate to Options and click on Panorama to begin shooting images in panorama mode.

Jailbreak your iOS 5.0.1 with Redsn0w

Below is the complete step-by-step to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch.

Before we get started, please consider that:

    * The jailbreak doesn’t currently work on the iPad 2 nor the brand new iPhone 4S.
    * This is a tethered jailbreak, so whenever you need/feel compelled to reboot your iDevice, you will have to connect it to a PC or Mac running Redsn0w in order to jump-start it.
    * Finally, please consider that if and when the untethered jailbreak appears, you will have to start a fresh – you will not be able to simply ‘upgrade’ your jailbreak as it were.

So, hopefully you’re clear on the above, so let’s get jailbreaking!

Step 1: Download the latest version of iTunes (10.5) for Windows or Mac.

Step 2: Connect your iOS device to your PC or Mac and backup everything up. Although it’s a simple process, always better to be safe than sorry.

Step 3: Update to software version 5.0.1 Beta; download links of which can be legally found on iOS Dev Center only.

Step 4: Grab the latest version of Redsn0w, depending on your operating system, for Windows or Mac.

Step 5: Start Redsn0w. Click on “Extras”, and then click on “Select IPSW” option to manually select the final public version of iOS 5 (NOT iOS 5.0.1) for your device. Download links for iOS 5 can be found here.

Step 6: Now go back, and click on "Jailbreak", and opt to "Install Cydia". You will then be led through a sequence to place your device into DFU mode. Once your device has achieved DFU mode, Redsn0w will apply the jailbreak.

Booting Tethered:
Step 7: Once the Cydia installation is complete, you will need to boot the device into a tethered state in order for the jailbreak to work – something you will indeed be required to do every time you reboot. Enter DFU mode, and in "Extras", select "Just Boot".
