iPhone Case = Condom Holder?

Designed by Annex products, this isn’t the company’s first interesting iPhone case. Annex has previously created two different cases as part of Kickstarter projects. Openacase, a case with a built-in bottle opener, and the Quad Lock case that can be mounted a variety of different locations.

iOS 5.0.1 arrives with battery fix problems

The updates comes a little more than a week after Apple first acknowledged that some users were, in fact, running into problems with battery life after upgrading to the newer version of iOS. In conjunction with that, the company released a beta version of the software for developers to test. A second beta of that software arrived a day and a half later.

Apple has not copped to any specific reason as to why some users were experiencing shorter than usual battery life as part of iOS 5. Originally it was believed to be related to some of the hardware changes with the iPhone 4S, including a move to a dual-core processor, though some iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 users were experiencing issues as well.

Not included in the update are two recently discovered, though for now inaccessible iOS features. They include a panorama mode in Apple's camera application that's able to take panoramic shots by sweeping the camera side to side, as well as a new auto-correct menu in the keyboard. Both of those features are tucked away within the depths of the software, but were pulled out by developers this week.

Enable The Native Panorama Camera Mode On iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPad 2, iPod touch Running iOS 5 Without Jailbreak

As those of you who regularly follow Redmond Pie will know, we are more than partial to a jailbreak here and there. Having said that, those using the new iOS 5 are restricted to a tethered jailbreak (or the slightly-more bearable SemiTether), so unfortunately, until we hear anything more from, say, the Chronic Dev-Team, pod2g, or the iPhone Dev-Team, we cannot enjoy Apple’s latest and greatest mobile operating system in all that untethered jailbroken loveliness.

For that reason, lots of people have opted to hang on to versions of iOS 4, particularly the GreenPois0n’d 4.2.1; as well as 4.3.3, which brought in many new jailbreakers with comex’s third iteration of the über-easy-to-use JailbreakMe.

Also, iPhone 4S, and iPad 2 users are completely left out because there is no currently no jailbreak solution available for these two devices.

But now, those of you on iOS 5, with an itch to perform a hack without having to jailbreak the device, you can now enable the hidden-yet-native panorama option for your camera’s device, using a very simple hack.

This will work on any Gyroscope capable device, including iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

We’ve enclosed a guide on how this can be achieved, so follow carefully, and you’ll be taking panoramic snaps lickety split!

Step 1: Backup your device’s data in iTunes. This is not the usual precautionary measure, you’ll actually need to modify this backup in order to perform the hack.

Step 2: Download iBackupBot from here. It’s compatible with both Windows and Mac.

Step 3: Once it’s finished downloading, install and launch.

Step 4: Locate your com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist file, as depicted below.

Step 5: Double click the file which will take you to the editing page.

Step 6: Directly below <key>DiskSpaceWasLow</key> <false/>, add <key>EnableFirebreak</key> <true/> then hit the disk icon to save.

Step 7: Restore to your backup via iTunes.

Step 8: The process is now complete. Launch the Camera.app, navigate to Options and click on Panorama to begin shooting images in panorama mode.

Hidden panorama mode uncovered in iOS camera

The mode, which was discovered and revealed on Twitter by developer Conrad Kramer, allows consumers to capture panoramic images by snapping multiple photos while sweeping the camera from left to right.
The mode is activated by setting the "EnableFirebreak" key to YES in a preference file within the mobile operating system, Kramer said in his tweet. A hacker known as Chpwn posted screenshots on Twitter of the panorama mode in action.

It's unknown why Apple has chosen to hide capability, but presumably the company plans to unveil it in the future, perhaps after further testing.

Hints of the mode materialized in July when Apple released a beta of iOS 5 to developers. Code in that beta offered directions on how to use the feature that would let users take superwide photos of their surroundings using iOS' built-in camera app.

Don't get scammed when selling your used iPhone 'You should ask Maggie'

In the October 4 edition of Ask Maggie, headlined Where to unload your laptop for top dollar, CNet listed the Web site CashForiPhones.com as a place to sell a used iPhone. Since then, the author learned from various readers and through my own investigation, that this particular Web site has a reputation for offering customers a high price for their used iPhones and then greatly reducing the offer once the company has possession of the device.

Its simply awesome for people who doesn't update themselves with the up to date iPhone trade in price.

So Malaysian, you can just convert the rate from US Dollar to Ringgit Malaysia after you get the price that offered by Maggie!

BlackBerry snatch iPhone's UK smartphone crown

Smartphone sales went backwards in the UK during Q3 as customers abandoned Nokia and Apple. The figures don't look good when compared to last year's storming sales, and it's clear shoppers held off buying new gear during the build up to the latest iPhone launch.

BlackBerry took the UK smartphone crown from Apple despite shipments declining two per cent to 1.2 million units as Apple sales fell 26 per cent to slightly under 1.2 million handsets. In third place, Samsung soared 178 per cent to 1.1 million units.

Don't sleep with your smart phone nearby

A fellow named Daniel Sieberg was telling me his hard-and-fast rule for getting through the night.

He takes all of his digital devices -- laptops, tablets, cellphones, anything portable that has a screen -- to another room before he turns off the light. He has come to terms with the fact that the technological gadgets that have so thoroughly insinuated themselves into our lives can become addictive.

So, when it's time for slumber, he locks them out. He won't even let his cellphone charge overnight in the bedroom:

"If it's there, I would have the temptation to turn it on and check it."

We have learned to celebrate, even revere, the wireless gadgets we carry around and the inventors who bring them to us; the response to the death of Steve Jobs this month was emblematic of how important our do-it-all phones, our computers, our tablets and related digital devices have become. We say that the technology has changed life as we used to know it.

But how much is too much?

And, more to the point: How many of us have the nagging feeling that we are somehow unable to disconnect -- that the electronic devices we own have begun to own us?

There is an instinct to treat the subject whimsically: "Land o'Goshen, Ma, those kids are walking down the street staring at their cellphone screens." It's as if any criticism of what the digital age has done to society brands the person raising the questions as backward, afraid of change, irrationally wedded to outmoded ways.

iPhone = Spy Phone?

What if a hacker could log every key you typed on your PC by placing a cellphone nearby? USresearchers have shown how this is possible using any smartphone available today.

At a conference in Chicago on Thursday, a group of computer researchers from Georgia Tech will report on another potential threat. The researchers have shown that the accelerometer and orientation sensor of a phone resting on a surface can be used to eavesdrop as a password is entered using a keyboard on the same surface. They were able to capture the words typed on the keyboard with as much as 80 percent accuracy.
